Preventing Mold in Your Gutters with a Gutter Guard

gutter-guardGutters tend to trap water and debris, which could stay stagnant for long periods of time, which is why it's important to consider a gutter guard system.

These systems can help reduce the build up of mold and other allergens.

Without regular cleaning, the buildup of water makes your gutter an excellent breeding ground for mold and mildew.

Cleaning them will help to prevent rotting, which ultimately could pose health risks to the inhabitants of the house.

The Gutter Guard and Mold Removal

Molds can cause a number of health problems, among them asthma attacks and allergies. There are certain types of molds that can even cause severe respiratory problems, especially among children and the elderly.

This is why proper removal of these molds and mildew should be a priority when cleaning gutters and removing mildew is actually easy. Start by removing the gutter guard to have access to the contents of the gutter.

If you have leaves, soil, twigs, and stagnant water in the gutters, remove them by flushing them out. Manually remove large pieces of debris to free the gutter from any obstruction. You can remove the smaller pieces by flushing them out using a hose.

Now that the gutter is free from obstruction, you can start removing the mold. It can be easily removed by pouring a solution of bleach and water on to the surfaces of the gutter.

Allow the solution to sit for 20 minutes. This will give time for the bleach to seep through the cracks on the surfaces and kill the molds. Rinse the gutter after 20 minutes by hosing it down with water, and replace the gutter guards.

To prevent molds from returning check the gutters regularly. Also, ensure that the gutter is free from debris and twigs and that all water can drain through.

As long as the gutters remain dry and unclogged, there is little chance for molds and mildew to grow. It is also helpful if you use gutter guards that have holes in them to let air and sunlight in.
